Much has been written here about my love for weekend breakfasts. Be it an early morning bite in the kitchen or a late afternoon brunch out in a cafe, a great weekend isn't complete without kicking back and clearing my mind over cups of coffee, a heartfelt meal and lots of sunshine.

Last weekend, I found joy in a jarful of homemade jam at one of my favourite weekend hideaways, The Bread Shop. I couldn't help but get drawn to the display of glass jars with decent coloured contents, topped with brown paper covers and a little tag tied with papyrus ribbons on the shelves right next to the cashier. What can I say? I'm a sucker for interesting displays and cute packaging.
These homemade jams comes in 3 flavours - Strawberry, Traditional Marmalade and Passionfruit Curd. Apparently no artificial flavours, colours, gelling agent, water or preservative are added into the manufacturing process. And at RM13.90 (or was is it RM18.90?) for a jar of 250g, it is cheaper than something for the same size at BSC's O'Gourmet. I couldn't resist and brought home a bottle of Passionfruit Curd to go with my loaf of organic multigrain bread. I thought it was the most interesting flavour of the three, and my instincts were right.
The ingredients on the label reads "Passionfruit, Lemon, Sugar, Australian Butter, A+ Eggs and Lots of pure love & care". Don't you just love food that's made with love? The jam had a strong scent of passionfruit that whets your appetite the instant you pop the jar open. Its smooth custard-like texture glides easily over a slice of toast. It's almost like the Sri Kaya (coconut-egg jam) that we Malaysians love, only that this version is bursting with fruity flavours. What I like most about this jam in particular is its sugar level. It's not too sweet and it had a good balance of sourness to keep it interesting. Throughout the entire week, I started adding more stuff to test its versatility. I'm glad to say that she is quite the village bicycle and could ride along well with other spreads like peanut butter or fresh fruits like bananas.
Although the instruction is to consumed the entire jar within a month of opening, I'm not too sure if it is even possible to last until the end of today. My family seems to be lapping up every last drop of this golden yellow spread. I think it is a good time to replenish with a new jar. What flavour should I get this time? Decisions, decisions. Aren't weekends supposed to be stress-free?

ReplyDeletebeautiful colour for your jam. based on both the vibrant yellow and custardy texture, it almost looks like a jar full of concentrated egg yolk! =)
Oooh such golden goodnesssss... I wonder if the Devil would like a jar for our Federal Territory Day Holiday Monday Breakfast tomorrow? :)
ReplyDeletewow.. I'm tranfixed looking at the bread & that jam!
ReplyDeleteYa rite, the Passionfruit Curd is the most 'outstandng" option out of the trio!
Ciki: Keep your paws away from me! :P
ReplyDeleteAhpa: Yeah, if you look at it that way, this is definitely affordable. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's 13 or 18. Either way, still worth it.
Sean: Goober rocks! Peanut butter and jelly. And yes, you're not wrong to say that the jam looks "eggy". It's almost like kaya. Maybe somebody shud make a passionfruit bao!
LFB: Jeles! Wish I could ikut. Bring Ahpa lah.
TNG: U and your fixation with bread! ROFL!

ReplyDeleteI think that I'll buy each one of those 3 flavours :) my in-laws are going to love me :P
ReplyDeleteFor me... I prefer to spread hazelnut chocolate on top of my wholemeal bread.. Nutella to be exact!! LOL.. otherwise it'll be simple peanut butter with butter
daily bread and jam is good. and surprisingly tasty and feeling and yet straighforward. Must be a basic human eating instinct
