The glory days of Lot10 on the Bukit Bintang stretch may seem like a faded memory but that may not be the case much longer. YTL, the property owner, is in the midst of revamping and repositioning the iconic green giant to put the gusto back into it. One of the many highlights of this exercise is the new food court, Hutong, on the lower ground floor. While it may be positioned as a food court, it will not be just any other food court with the same old boring fare.
Touted as the "world's first heritage gourmet village", it features about 20 food vendors that have served the best in local Chinese cuisine for over three generation - all apparently hand-picked and invited to operate here by Tan Sri Francis Yeoh himself. So one could expect well-known names like Petaling Street's Kim Lian Kee Hokkien Mee, Ho Weng Kee Char Siu Wanton Noodles, Hon Kee porridge, Soong Kee Beef Noodles, Mo Sang Kor Bak Kut Teh and Jalan Gasing's Ipoh Chicken Rice. Yes, you read right. There's char siu and bak kut teh served here. With real pork, none of those faux-porcine creations here.
As I navigate through the artistically designed and confusing "alleys" of the food court for over 20-minutes or so in search of lunch. And from all the choices, I ended up with a only a plate of Popiah (Eggskin Springrolls) from the Campbell Popiah stall. Not that I minded actually. After all the meaty meals I've been having of late, this was a good change. This Popiah seller is no new kid on the block, they have been making these rolls right behind Yut Kee for the longest time, one can call them the Lord of Popiahs in KL. In true testament to their mastery, their popiah skin is thin enough yet concealing all the juices within. Light yet sturdy. I don't really know how to explain it well. Take a bite and you'll see what I mean.
While dining here isn't exactly light on the pocket, one should not expect to 'street-food' prices when dining here, Hutong is still a good place to go for your lardy fix. Word of caution, do go early though as most of their good stuff are usually sold out by 4pm!

Updated August 2010: Unfortunately, Campbell Popiah no longer operates from this food court any longer.

ReplyDeletesigh, 4pm is so early. wish they would stock up enough for dinner. i still haven't managed to have the popiah yet, but here's an even sadder fact: the original popiah stall is just a 5 mins walk from the office where i've been working since 1999, but i can't remember if i've ever tried it before...
